“…This brings us to the moral imperative of the US tax policy. Who will be responsible for the shifted tax burden that is the direct result of the generation of tax breaks that occurred from Presidents Reagan to Bush? Will the burden be carried by removing the safety nets of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, and other programs that ensure that the working poor and the elderly will not fall through the cracks of our nation? Will the burden be carried by raising taxes on the middle class, or by removing programs aimed at helping them move up in our economic strata, or will the burden be carried by raising taxes on the wealthiest in our society? The Republican Party has been consistent in this regard. Many of the currently elected Republican politicians have signed a pledge never to raise taxes under any circumstances.[i] Although no Republican politician has explicitly said so, by refusing to raise taxes on businesses and the wealthiest in our nation they have, by default, determined that the shifted tax burden would either be carried by the poor and the middle class or paid for through deficit spending. …”
