Chapter 1: Oppressive Freedom

Excerpt from God is Not a Republican  (C) 2012 Benjamin P. Dixon

“Although he was granted every liberty he desired, the Prodigal Son did not understand that he did not have to indulge in each of them. Likewise, as Christian Americans we do not have to participate or even condone every freedom available to us in the United States. While we may adamantly disagree with the many oppressive activities that American freedom allows, it is the maturity we derive from Christ that keeps us from falling and not the force of laws aimed at legislating morality.

Not only do we, as Americans, not have to live according to anyone’s moral standards, the Constitution guarantees us the freedom not to have our personal morality measured by someone else’s spiritual benchmarks. In other words, no one in America can be the spiritual judge of another. Furthermore, a holy lifestyle can only be accomplished through our individual choices and decisions, not through forced morality. In the absence of this forced morality, we as individuals—and as Americans—have the freedom to be oppressed; but most importantly, we have the freedom to be free.”
